OPeNDAP allows one to give a application a url and have it directly download data. To read this data into matlab use 
loaddap('http://197.155.140.164/SOURCES/.WORLDBATH/bath/%5BY+%5Ddetrend-bfl/1+index/.bath/ngridtable/dods')
